It started with a vision…
In 2019 the Honors College at Washington Adventist University was the first Adventist college or university to hold a Model United Nations conference for high school students. CAPITALMUN was born. Since then the program has expanded and now includes a yearly conference, course offerings at both the university and high school level, and participation in The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN), the largest and oldest MUN conference in the world, attracting over 2500 students each year.
In addition, the WAU Honors College now attends conference for college and university students. WAU attends the National Model United Nations in Washington, D.C. each year and we continue to look for additional conferences where we can participate.
CAPITALMUN is one step in a broader WAU Honors College plan to increase international opportunities for students at WAU. Our location in Washington, D.C. allows us to not only give students the ‘MUN Experience’, but to also supplement it with real interactions with members of the international community in D.C. Students who come to the Honors College and participate in MUN are also encouraged to attend global conferences and events in Washington — events that are happening all the time. Recently, a group of students attended a conference titled “Security Issues in the Arctic” that was held at the home of the U.S. Ambassador from Norway. Students have also visited embassies in Washington including the embassy of Belgium, Libya, and Equatorial Guinea.
We are proud the offer this unique educational experience at Washington Adventist University. As our MUN program grows we plan to introduce more conferences that reach a wider group of students from around the country.
